Composition of raw materials

Chamotte bricks mainly contain SiO2 and Al2O3. The amount of SiO2 in the composition of chamotte bricks is 50-85% and the amount of Al2O3 is between 10-45%. These bricks have a maximum of 3% Fe2O3, 3% TiO2 and small amounts of magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, sodium oxide and potassium oxide. To achieve such a composition, mainly clay or chamotte baked from clays are used as raw materials. The color of this brick, mainly in brick kilns, mainly ranges from yellow to orange and depends on the length of time it stays in the kiln and its firing temperature.

Production Process

The main raw material of chamotte bricks is clay. Part of the clay should be pre-baked. This is done at a temperature of 1200 to 1500 degrees Celsius in vertical furnaces, rotary furnaces or tunnel furnaces.The product of this process is chamotte, which should be crushed and granulated. Granulated chamotte is then mixed with the right amount of clay and water. The next steps are shaping, drying and baking. Firing of chamotte bricks usually takes place at a temperature of 1250 to 1500 degrees Celsius in a tunnel kiln.

Phases in the product

The main phases in chamotte bricks are: mullite and glass phase. The glass phase constitutes between 40 and 55% of bricks. Also, depending on the conditions, traces of tridymite and cristobalite can also be found in chamotte brick.
